In 2005, Starbucks opened its first LEED-certified store in Hillsboro, Oregon. Since then, over 1,600 Starbucks stores around the world have achieved LEED certification. Now, Starbucks adds another very special accolade to its roster: every state in the U.S. is home to at least one LEED-certified Starbucks store.

This is a remarkable achievement in and of itself, but the impact of each of these stores on Starbucks partners, guests and entire communities is the real story. Starbucks stores leverage a diverse set of sustainability elements, and the company has mastered the art of integrating sustainability into its store design and operations.

Sourcing building materials locally, installing water-efficient fixtures, using energy-efficient LED lighting, and choosing low-emitting materials for their adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings and flooring are just a few of the ways the company weaves green building best practices into its spaces.

Starbucks was a key contributor to the development of the LEED for Retail program and was also among the first to pilot USGBC’s LEED Volume Certification program, which streamlines the certification process by focusing on similarities in building design, operations and delivery.
